The word "Delphi" refers to the Oracle of Delphi, a site in Greek mythology where prophecies (predictions) were passed on.
A forecasting method based on the results of questionnaires sent to a panel of experts. Several rounds of questionnaires are sent out, and the anonymous responses are aggregated and shared with the group after each round. The experts are allowed to adjust their answers in subsequent rounds. Because multiple rounds of questions are asked and because each member of the panel is told what the group thinks as a whole, the Delphi Method seeks to reach the "correct" response through consensus.
Where does it come from?
It has its origins in the Cold War in the 1950s when the Rand Corporation, funded by the US Air Force, was trying to find a way to establish reliable consensus of opinion among a group of experts about how Soviet military planners might target the US industrial system in an attack. And how many atomic bombs would be needed to have a specified level of impact on US military capability. This was the original ‘Project Delphi’.
